Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi, I’m Minet Kim and I’m an illustrator and visual artist based in South Korea.

Describe the city you’re living in and what it’s like to live there.

I grew up in a small countryside near the sea in Korea, Yeosu, moved to New York City to study illustration, and I’m currently living in Suncheon, the city where I spent my teenage years. Besides, I also lived in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Seoul and a very small island called ‘Geomundo’ for several years. I have lived in many cities since I was young, but I could not compare the comfort and warmth of my heart whenever I went to my hometown. This year, I moved to my hometown and met the natural scenery and various people, and I am working on it with inspiration and fun.

What is the best and worst thing about living in your city?

The city I moved to this year is a very small town. The city is very close to the sea, and you can easily see birds that are hard to see in big cities like cranes while taking a walk. People are very kind, and My dogs Mori and Cherry are so good to take a walk in nature. It may be a little boring, but I still enjoy the world full of green.

Give us 3 words that describe what it’s like to be a creative in your city.

Green, Natural, Calm

How did you start your career in art?

I’ve been drawing since I was really young. There was nothing to do in my hometown when I was little. So I enjoyed drawing whatever I want with my friends and collecting seashells with my grandfather nearby his ship and watched a lot of animation. I believe this experience helped me find what I am going to do and develop imaginations in my works. One day, I was thinking I wanted to have more experience for my life and my works that I decided to go to New York and had a lot of good opportunities to meet various people, cultures, and many more.

There were many people around me who actively helped me do what I wanted to do. Whenever I lost confidence in my work, the phrase “Do whatever you want, that’s the answer.” became the most supportive to me.

Were the people around you supportive of your decision on working as a creative?

What are some goals and ambitions you have for your future work?

Until a few years ago, I had made resolutions such as “I’m going to work with a certain company” or “I’m going to work for a magazine.” But what I feel now is that I want to do what I like for a very long time until I become a grandmother. My current goal is to be a wonderful grandmother.

If you could collaborate with any person in the world who would it be?

There is no one in particular, but there is an idea that I would like to work with people in other media fields like music, dance, movies, etc.

What are the biggest challenges you face in working as a creative?

In mid-June, illustrators Jinhwa Jang and Damien Jeon, who are currently working together as a project group, will work on a mural project under the theme “Nature” on the city wall where I live now. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of results the illustration work that has always existed on canvas, paper, and screens will bring to the wall.

Independent, enterprising and free. And I love that, and I want to be like that.

How would you describe the women around you?

Independent, enterprising and free. And I love that, and I want to be like that.

Were there any local female creatives that you looked up to when you were growing up?

The person I was inspired by is not a creator but my mom.
Although it is changing a lot now, women born in Korea of all generations have forced a certain image of a woman in society. But since I was young, my mom has let me express what I like freely without forcing or asking me to do so. And after growing up, it was really difficult for mothers of that generation to leave their experiences behind and let their children be free.

It is about constantly looking for what you are interested in.

Do you have any advice for other women who are aspiring to work in your field?

It is about constantly looking for what you are interested in.

What type of music do you like to listen to?

I don’t listen to music these days. I usually listen to sounds such as the sea and grass like the sound of nature.

What’s your favorite local food spot?

Every restaurant serving seafood

Felicia Chen asks: If you could choose a different career path, what would it be?

I sometimes imagine what it would be like to be a person who makes music.

Nadya Noor asks: What’s the craziest thing you do with your own art?

Creating space that doesn’t exist in the real world

What question would you like us to ask the next artist?

What are the three words that describe you?
