YELLOW FANG

YELLOW FANG

Meet all-female rock band from Bangkok, YELLOW FANG.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

We are a Bangkok-based, all female, 3 piece rock band. We met in University while studying arts and design(around 2008). We get to travel to many places to play our music and connect with people from all different cultures and languages, experience each country through music.

Describe the city you’re living in and what it’s like to live there.
We live in the city of Bangkok, it rarely sleeps. We can find all kinds of street food-desserts-fruits, good places at different times of the day or late until the morning. It’s a medium-sized city to move about to different music or creative events through Bangkok.

What is the best and worst thing about living in your city?
The best thing is the food, the weather(minus the pollution).
The worst is the traffic and air pollution.

Give us 3 words that describe what it’s like to be a creative in your city.

Inspire each other

How did you start your career in music?
We started out as a band of Uni friends, playing on special occasions for the faculty. Then we started to play for events such as art exhibitions and parties, then the number of members became three. After we had some of our songs recorded was when we began to be asked to perform as a band. Music and lyrics were written mainly by Pang(guitar/lead) and all the lyrics and choruses are in Thai language. One event lead to another and others.

Were the people around you supportive of your decision on working as a creative?

The close people around us are very supportive and we all have different interests apart from playing music. We kept our personal interests to have different perspectives and thoughts. That helps when we try to create.

What are some goals and ambitions you have for your future work?

We would like to tour around the world and meet our contemporaries. People from different cultures with the same interest and passion for music.

If you could collaborate with any person in the world who would it be?

Michael Jackson, Solange, Tame Impala

How would you describe the women around you?

Women around us are strong but with humility. Kind and cool.

Were there any local female creatives that you looked up to when you were growing up?

Rik Wachirapilan is an avant-garde female vocalist. Her works are hymns of ancient stories, stories of gore with thoughts of Buddhism. She also portrayed those stories and styles in art and illustrations on her social platform.

Are there any challenging aspects of being a female in your industry?
Not anymore. We think males and females now have an equal chance to be liked. Maybe it is more of how the voice fits with the music, the message, the person itself; than being of about the gender.

Do you have any advice to young women who are aspiring to work in your field?

To do what you love, and to reuse-reduce-recycle. Thankyou.
